About the event

Join us in celebrating May is Bike Month at this month's lunch program on theCentral City Mobility Project, featuring Megan Johnson and Phil Vulliet, Senior Engineers with the City of Sacramento. The Central City Mobility Project will be the largest expansion of their protected bikeway network on the grid. Sacramento's first parking-protected bikeways were constructed in Downtown in 2018, on 31 blocks along four streets. This project will expand the parking-protected bikeways by 70 blocks along seven streets, creating an interconnected network that will allow people on bikes and scooters to travel between homes, jobs, and destinations across the grid. This project will also convert 5th Street from one-way to two-way, which will calm traffic and allow for bidirectional bike access between Broadway, Downtown, the Golden 1 Center, Sacramento Valley Station, and the Railyards.

The design of such significant reconfiguration of streets in an urban setting required extensive coordination with a wide range of stakeholders, partner agencies, and City services. It also involved a complex funding strategy using grant funds through three state programs. And construction of a project with such a large footprint in the central city core involves a high-level of coordination to maintain access for pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers, and transit users, as well as to communicate with businesses, residents, and employees. This presentation will provide a glimpse into Sacramento's approach to design, fund, and construct the Central City Mobility Project, and give a sneak peak into the future of mobility on the grid.
