SCHOLARSHIPS

WTS is committed to the advancement of women in the transportation industry, and one of the many effective ways we actively enable this advancement is through our scholarship program. Since 2005, our Sacramento Chapter has awarded over $125,000 in scholarships to 100 young women pursuing careers supporting the transportation industry through the generous donations of our supporters and members.

Eligibility

In addition to selection criteria listed on each application, in order to be eligible to receive a scholarship from WTS Sacramento, students must reside or study in one of the following counties:

Will Kempton
High School Scholarship

The WTS-Sacramento Chapter Will Kempton High School Scholarship is available to a female high school senior in the Sacramento Region who is inspired to pursue a college degree in a transportation-related field, including studies in engineering, math, architecture, geography, business, law, political science, environmental science, English, planning, economics, sociology and government policy. The scholarship is named for the former Director of the California Department of Transportation who serves as a strong advocate for WTS and the importance of education.

Doris Matsui Diversity and Inclusion
High School Scholarship

The Doris Matsui Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) High School Scholarship is a new scholarship established by the WTS Sacramento Chapter to encourage high-school students from historically underserved communities to pursue career paths in a transportation-related field. Underserved communities may include communities impacted by factors such as race, religious affiliation, disability status, and sexual orientation. Transportation-related fields may include studies in engineering, math, architecture, geography, business, law, political science, environmental science, English, planning, economics, sociology or government policy.

Junior college/

trade school scholarship

This scholarship supports female students in the transportation industry. The scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to students at a junior college or trade school. The scholarship is open to women pursuing a career in a transportation-related field, including studies in engineering, math, architecture, geography, business, law, political science, environmental science, English, planning, economics, sociology and government policy.

BimLa g. rhinehart undergraduate leadership scholarship

This undergraduate scholarship was established in recognition of Bimla G. Rhinehart’s leadership and contribution to improving transportation in California. Bimla applied her broad expertise in transportation issues both as the Executive Director of the California Transportation Commission (CTC) and numerous leadership roles at the California Department of Transportation to improve the quality of life for all Californians. She was recognized as a leader in developing and fostering long lasting relationships with stakeholders and partners across the state to promote the success of California’s integrated intermodal transportation program. Bimla received the WTS Sacramento Chapter Woman of the Year award in 2010 and accepted the Employer of the Year award in 2012 on behalf of the CTC.

Sharon d. banks memorial

undergraduate scholarship

This scholarship honors Sharon D. Banks, chief executive officer (CEO) of AC Transit in Alameda-Contra Costa County, California. As CEO during most of the 1990's, Sharon led the agency in a pioneering effort to introduce cultural and organizational changes aimed at motivating the public transit work force. She was a member of the WTS Advisory Board and received the WTS San Francisco Chapter Women and Employer of the Year awards.

Graduate Scholarship

The WTS mission to build the transportation industry through the global advancement of women can be realized by encouraging women to further their careers as leaders in transportation. WTS recognizes that transportation is more than simply moving people and goods from one place to another.  It is a driver of growth and an integral part of communities throughout the world. The leadership, skills, and perspectives of women are essential to ensure that the transportation systems of the future respond to the needs of all. Through the Leadership Legacy Scholarship, WTS seeks to motivate and reward women who demonstrate leadership in the industry to bring ideas, innovation, and new approaches to transportation challenges in the US and beyond. This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding young woman pursuing graduate studies working toward a career in transportation or a related field, and who demonstrates an interest in advancing transportation innovation internationally.

Helene m. overly memorial

Graduate Scholarship

This scholarship honors Helene M. Overly, the first Executive Secretary of WTS, for her dedicated service to WTS. Helene became a WTS member in 1981. She brought with her 15 years of experience in public service, tremendous organizational abilities, and a spirit of determination that helped WTS nearly double its membership in two years.
